Hari Raya Aidilfitri also called Hari Raya Puasa is the Malay term for Muslim festival of Eid ul Fitr. Hari Raya means Day of Celebration and is celebrated by Muslims in Malaysia, Singapore,Brunei and many other countries throughout the world. It is a day of celebrating end of fasting and the day to renew relation with other people. People greet each other by saying ‘Selamat Hari Raya’ which means Happy Eid in Malay or they say ‘maaf zahir dan batin’ which is asking for forgiveness from others in Malay.
Hari Raya is the end of fasting season of Ramadan. On this day people assemble at the mosque early in the morning to perform the Hari Raya Puasa prayer and then visit the graves of the departed. It is the day of asking for forgiveness, festivity and joy and is marked by wearing new clothes holding open house grand feasts serving Malay delicacies such as ketupat or rice cake and meat cuisine called rendang and houses are lit up with lamps welcoming happiness. On the eve of Hari Raya Muslims recite takbir, the prayer at the mosque or in small congregation. Hotels and restaurants in big cities have special Hari Raya menu for people. The festivity spirit is high and towns and cities are lit up signifying the happiness and gusto associated with this festival.
In many countries Hari Raya preparations begin one month before the festival. Markets are set up selling carpets, food, clothes, music and lots of other things.
